The National OpenAIRE Workshop for UK Institutions

Following Open Access week, on Tuesday, the 1^st of November 2016, OpenAIRE, in partnership with Jisc, held a national workshop for UK universities, which focused on the uptake of the Horizon 2020 open access policy in the UK and how to comply with that policy; how to take part in the open research data pilot; and how to take part in the FP7 post-grant open access pilot.  Speakers included:

• Marina Angelaki, research associate, e-publishing and SSH unit at the National Documentation Centre (EKT)
• Kevin Ashley, director, DCC
• Christopher Brown, senior co-design manager, Jisc
• Rachel Bruce, deputy chief innovation officer, Jisc
• Stephen Curry, professor of structural biology, Imperial College London
• Pablo de Castro, open access project officer, LIBER, the Association of European Research Libraries
• Caroline Ingram, senior co-design manager, Jisc
• Sarah Jones, senior institutional support officer, DCC
• Frank Manista, senior open access support coordinator, Jisc
• Tony Ross-Hellauer, scientific manager for the OpenAIRE2020 project, Georg-August-University Göttingen

The target audience of the event were research administrators, research librarians, project coordinators and academic researchers, but publishers also showed interest in the day, with a representative from Elsevier in attendance, as well.

The presentations included the following topics:

• The European Commission’s Open Science agenda, the Horizon 2020 Open Access policy, introduction to OpenAIRE, how OpenAIRE can support Open Access
• A View on Open Access from an Academic Perspective – the benefits of OA
• Knowledge Net – the network that was established in PASTEUR4OA and moved to OpenAIRE which advocates for the implementation, revision and alignment of OA policies
• The FP7 Post-Grant OA pilot and how to apply for funding
• The Horizon 2020 research data pilot and how to comply
• Research data management, data management plans, and the DMP tool (and Jisc’s involvement)
• Brexit: the implications for Open Access in the UK

Because the OpenAIRE workshop had those ties with Research Data, there was also a briefing presentation on the Research Data Management workshop, which happened on the 2^nd of November at the same venue and had some of the same speakers and interested parties.

The feedback from the attendees was largely positive, and the presentations all received interesting and interested questions.  The presentations are available for download.
