Soon after the release of the Open Science Training Handbook, an interesting resource that provides theoretical notions and practical guidance on how to organize open science training, and the Roadmap for Implementing Open Science Training Practices in Research Institutions, an important advocacy resource, the FOSTER Plus project organised the FOSTER Open Science Trainer Bootcamp.
The goal of this event was to further develop the participants skills to give training on open science to researchers in their own institutions, and also to create a trainer’s network that can support Open Science training in Europe. From the 18th to the 20th of April, 32 researchers and research support professionals from 16 countries across Europe gathered in the Centre for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona for an intense 3-day programme.

The first day covered theoretical aspects of Open Science; on the second day, participants learned from the guest speakers, Bianca Kramer and Jeroen Bosman (Utrecht University) and Pedro Fernandes (Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência) different forms of training and began working on their own open science mini-training; and day three consisted of group work presentations and working on their own training roadmap. Learn more on the Bootcamp and FOSTER’s trainers.

Another important resource to be released in the next months is the Open Science Toolkit. This covers different aspects of Open Science, such as Open access publishing; Open peer review; Open research data; Ethics and data protection; Licensing, re-use and innovation; Open source software and workflows; Open notebooks; Text and data mining and Citizen science. Due to its modular structure, it can be used both by people wanting to learn more on a specific topic; and by trainers by re-using the courses and materials or integrating them into their own training materials.

After this bootcamp, I am now a certified 'Open Science Super Trainer' (medal and diploma as proof)!!! If of interest to anyone, here is the description of the mini-training we did on 'Open Identities' (as part of a larger workshop on Open Peer Reviewing): https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.6292328
