OANA Network Meeting in Vienna

On 23 January 2020 the 5th network meeting of OANA (Open Science Network Austria) took place at the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research in Vienna.

Following Falk Reckling's (FWF Der Wissenschaftsfonds) presentation on OANA's previous work and general goals were the reports about the working groups' (WG) outcomes.

The three main WGs are: Open Science strategy, legal aspects of Open Science as well as Open Science information (which was grouped into Open Science Training and OANA website relaunch).

Starting in 2018, two colleagues from the OpenAIRE NOAD Austria were part of the Open Science strategy working group and the OANA webpage relaunch, respectively.

The recommendation paper created by the "Open Science strategy working group" will be released within the next months. It will propose suggestions as to how Open Science can be implemented in Austria, intended for researchers as well as research institutions, research funders and research policy. The WG about legal aspects of Open Science produced a paper about recommendations to establish a national clearing office about copyright and data protection regarding research institutions.

Next on the agenda were six presentations about (new) initiatives in Austria, which also address Open Science.

Susanne Blumesberger from VUL (Vienna University Library) started with her presentation about the RepManNet (Repository Manager Network) in Austria, its working groups and its different fields of work.

The current and future RepManNet WGs are working on a variety of topics: exploring the Core Trust Seal for repositories and its potential costs, digital barrier-free accessibility (e.g. of repositories, for people with physical disabilities), university theses, preparation for the Open Access Week (2019, OpenAIRE NOAD Austria participated), visibility of repositories (through fitting technologies and metadata), digital humanities, Goobi, Fair Metadata and RDM in practice (starting 2020, OpenAIRE NOAD Austria is participating).

After the RepManNet talk Daniel Dörler and Florian Heigl from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna (BOKU Wien) presented Citizen Science Network Austria (CSNA) "Österreich forscht". Here they talked about anchoring Citizen Science (CS) with 39 partners in Austria, their approach to do-ocracy, past achievements and future goals (e.g. CS mentoring programme in Austria, working groups, establishing CS in society).

Next, Brigitte Kromp from VUL (Vienna University Library) highlighted the four work packages of AT2OA (Austrian Transition to Open Access) as well as the planned follow-up project AT2OA² and its five work packages (WP).

The WP of AT2OA dealt with the "Impact analysis of the transition to Open Access", the second with "Funding for transitional Open Access business models", the third worked on "Establishment, expansion and financial support for OA publication funds" and the fourth on "Promotion of OA publications and alternative OA publication models".

The five WPs of the follow-up project AT2OA² are:
1) transformative agreements for Austria,
2) Austrian Datahub for Open Access Negotiations and Monitoring,
3) publication cost evaluation and analysis at Austrian universities,
4) Predatory Publishing and 5) Visibility of Open Access publications.

Following, Thomas Haselwanter from the Innsbruck University presented the results of the "e-Infrastructures Austria Plus" project. He also recapitulated the benchmark data and the 8 work packages: Research Lifecycle, Policy of Research Data Management, DMPs, Institutional Repositories for Research Data, Metadata, Persistent Identifiers, "Go Fair" and the results of the work packages. OpenAIRE NOAD Austria worked in cooperation with this project and as joined effort the two-day workshop "Linking Open Science in Austria" was held in spring 2019.

Lisa Hönegger, from VUL and AUSSDA (The Austrian Social Science Data Archive) presented EOSC Pillar and spoke about "Coordination and Harmonisation of National & Thematic Initiatives to support EOSC".

At the end of this segment, Raman Ganguly (from ZID, the Vienna University Computer Center) talked about RDA Austria (Research Data Alliance), the mission and already covered topics, like data citation, DMP common standards, data management policies for SMEs and industry, repository certification, engaging with researcher, future research environments, EOSC and FAIR Data.
