Open Call Winner Phase 1 - euroCRIS

DRIS+: Enhancing the euroCRIS Directory of Research Information Systems (DRIS)

The DRIS+ proposal aims to enhance the euroCRIS Directory of Research Information Systems (DRIS) and to make it automatically searchable via a dedicated API.

This improvement is a follow-up action to the euroCRIS-led 3-month METIS2OpenAIRE project that was awarded funding by OpenAIRE in early 2018. This project allowed the first institutional CRIS (METIS at Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands) to expose and test its metadata feed against the CERIF-XML Guidelines and to undergo the first test validation against a minimally sufficient validator developed by euroCRIS.

As the number of test-harvested CRIS system increases and the opportunities grow for expanding this OpenAIRE data provider role across vendors and solutions, the enhanced DRIS is seen as a key element to streamline the process for metadata harvesting from the OpenAIRE portal.

Tender priority topics addressed: The DRIS+ proposal addresses Challenge no 3 within the OpenAIRE Call for Innovators, i.e. “Expanding the OpenAIRE Service Portfolio”. The proposed work will provide a missing piece in the set of features required to make the CRIS validation and harvesting into the OpenAIRE content aggregation a reality.

CRIS systems are now gradually setting up the OAI-PMH endpoints that will allow their metadata feeds to be exposed, validated and harvested by OpenAIRE. A CRIS directory that allows their persistent identification will effectively support the process for their validation and inclusion in the list of certified data providers to OpenAIRE.

It’s not only that these new data sources will provide a unique contextual metadata feed for instance in the area of funding information, but the CRIS harvesting process will allow OpenAIRE to engage a whole new range of stakeholders for which repositories may not be a priority, thus contributing to expand the reach of Open Science.

Phase 1 budget: 5200,00 €

About

euroCRIS, founded in 2002, is an international not-for-profit association that brings together experts on research information in general and research information systems (CRIS) in particular.

The mission of euroCRIS is to promote cooperation within and share knowledge among the research information community and interoperability of research information through CERIF, the Common European Research Information Format. Areas of interest also cover research databases, CRIS related data like scientific datasets, (open access) institutional repositories, as well as data access and exchange mechanisms, standards and guidelines and best practice for CRIS.

euroCRIS provides the framework for the flow of information between a broad variety of stakeholders: researchers, research managers and administrators, research councils, research funders, entrepreneurs and technology transfer organisations. euroCRIS as well addresses the media and the public. An important instrument for the exchange of information are International euroCRIS Conferences (biannual) and euroCris Strategic Membership Meetings (biannual).
