DMPs for Research Communities: Argos for ARIADNEplus

Context: A collaboration between OpenAIRE and ARIADNEplus started in April. The occasion was mutual interest to explore each other's Data Management Planning (DMP) products capabilities and exchange know-how that would complement current work and accelerate new advancements.

The products: Products involved in that effort are Argos, OpenAIRE's machine-actionable data management planning tool, and ARIADNEplus DMP template for archaeological research.

Also, Argos closes the DMP lifecycle by being fully integrated with Zenodo and thus offering the option to publish DMPs as outputs in an open and FAIR manner, among other things by assigning DOIs and licenses and by supporting DMPs as living documents through versioning. Moreover, Argos enhances the wealth of information contained in the OpenAIRE Research Graph by creating DMP entities which carry links to underlying outputs, services and semantics ensuring verification and integrity of research.

Areas of work and outcomes: The following activities monopolized the attention of ARIADNEplus and OpenAIRE interactions:

• Getting a better understanding of the landscape around DMP tools capabilities and of existing DMP templates for archaeology.

For the needs of this activity, a spreadsheet was created to collect data about:

- Descriptive information that would help to identify commonalities and differences regarding the scope and target audience that each tool serves together with the type of organisation running it.

- Technical information that would indicate adoption of specific software packages and highlight deviations even between tools with same software.

- Alignment with FAIR principles and the RDA Common Standard that would show the tools complying with global standards and progress in doing so.

From the draft comparison, it became apparent that many tools are gradually, each in its own pace, moving towards becoming machine-actionable and that there are not many DMP templates tailored to archeological data management (some examples are ARIADNEplus, Swedish National Data Service or ANR Modèle de PDG).

• Enriching both the ARIADNEplus DMP template and Argos tool with guidelines for better navigation and literacy on RDM

Starting point is the H2020 template. Both products were enhanced with narratives explaining basic concepts of RDM, such as what metadata is or what are the different types of data, supported by RDM resources produced by/ within the OpenAIRE network, mainly the RDM and the Legal Task Forces.

• Making ARIADNEplus template available from the Argos platform

A newer version of the ARIADNEplus template was created in Argos. This is based on the Argos H2020 template which is enriched with OpenAIRE APIs thus providing extra capabilities especially for archaeological data which are re-used.

• Enabling compliance with RDA Common Standards

Argos template editor applies the RDA Common Standard, thus making compliance easier by selecting the entities and properties that correspond to each question. Tests are going to be performed with the json exports that Argos produces for the ARIADNEplus template so that the project builds an RDA compliant import mechanism.

Lessons learned: Collaboration was made through in-kind contributions at a difficult time in humanity, confirming that synergies are possible even under challenging situations. This exercise also unveiled the necessity of research communities to work together with DMP providers for the benefit of tailored research data management.
